Michael Shaara was born on June 23, 1929 in Jersey City, N.J., and died on May 5, 1988 in Tallahassee, Florida. He was a writer and professor of English at Florida State University. His early fiction was published in numerous fantasy and science fiction magazines. By the late 1950s and early 1960s, Shaara broadened his focus to include mainstream fiction and began publishing his work in Cosmopolitan, Redbook, and the Saturday Evening Post.
